Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) Program

VPKlong

Who is eligible to apply?

Any student who resides in the attendance boundaries of Sunset Elementary and will turn four (4) years of age on or before September 1st of the incoming school year.

When can I submit the VPK documents?

In January before the incoming school year. Selection is through an in-house lottery and the lottery date is provided by the school district. The VPK lottery is usually held on or around February 24th

  • Original birth certificate
  • Updated immunization and health forms (DH 680 and DH 3040)
  • Certificate of Eligibility (visit www.VPKHelp.org)
  • Two (2) proofs of residence (FPL bill receipt, a copy of the Warranty Deed, or properly executed Lease Agreement). No phone, water, or cable bills will be accepted.
  • Parent picture ID

How will students be selected?

As documents are submitted, the child’s name will be placed on a preliminary roster and each child will be assigned a lottery number. The preliminary roster is not an acceptance or a waiting list. It is only a worksheet. Nineteen (19) randomly selected students will be chosen. If selected, the student will be placed on a final roster. Students not selected in the lottery will be placed on a waiting list and will be notified if, and when a space becomes available. Parents will be notified of the lottery results by school personnel via email and will be required to register their child within 10-days of notification. Parents of children accepted into the program must sign their Certificate of Eligibility and complete the registration documents by the deadline provided or they will forfeit their seat.

Sunset Elementary is a fee supported VPK. The VPK Program is free of charge from 8:20am to 11:20am; however, the day concludes at 1:50 pm. The VPK Afternoon Program offered from 11:20am to 1:50pm is funded by parent fees.

When will my child be registered to the school?

Registration is to be completed within 10-days of the lottery by the school’s registrar. There will be a parent orientation in May and a student meet and greet in August. All dates are to be announced. Children accepted into the VPK Program must reapply for Sunset Elementary’s International Magnet Studies Kindergarten Program. Students are not guaranteed a seat for the following school year unless they reside in the boundaries of Sunset Elementary and complete the required registration documents.
